Just playing in the US Masters golf tournament was a huge accomplishment for the 21-year-old Viktor Hovland of Oslo. When he also won the title as best amateur player he was all but speechless.
“I couldn’t be happier than I am now,” he told Norsk Golf magazine when it was all over after a weekend that also resulted in a major comeback for Tiger Woods. He won the Masters, while Hovland was just as jubilant.
He ended his Masters’ debut in a shared 32nd place, which in turn boosted his international ranking from 911th to 635th. Now he’s also qualified to play in both the US Open in June and the British Open in July.
Not bad for the young man from the Miklagard Golf Club just northeast of Oslo who also won the US Amateur tournament at Pebble Beach in California last summer. Hovland has also been playing college golf at Oklahoma State Unversity after becoming Norway’s best golfer at the age of 16.
