NATO soldier’s death still under probe

Autopsy results have determined that a NATO soldier from the Netherlands died from a heart attack. Military police are nonetheless continuing their investigation after the soldier was found dead in his bed in the Dutch barracks at Målselv on February 13.

He has been identitied as Ben Kooyman, age 42. His death has shaken fellow soldiers at “Camp Orange,” where the Dutch soldiers are still housed even though the NATO exercises that brought around 3,000 foreign soldiers to Norway in January were ultimately cancelled because of Corona virus infection fears.

Fellow soldiers have reported that Kooyman had stayed in bed most of the day when he later was found dead, but they’d had contact with them. A memorial service was held for him at the camp before his body was due to be sent back to the Netherlands.

“We have lost a fantastic colleague,” stated his unit, the Korps Mariniers, a rapid reaction force trained to be ready for duty anywhere in the world within 48 hours. “We send strength to his family in this difficult time.”
