Changes ahead for NewsInEnglish.no

This is a “Letter from the Editor” of sorts, addressed especially to readers who’ve followed NewsInEnglish.no since its launch in 2009. I’d like to thank you for your interest in views and news from Norway, and mention that the emphasis will be now be on the former rather than the latter.

The media world has changed dramatically since I first helped launch Oslo newspaper Aftenposten’s English service in 1999. Online news was in its infancy, there were no smart phones, no social media and few if any online translation services available. It was difficult if not impossible to get Norwegian news professionally delivered in English, whereas news in a variety of languages can now spread globally as it occurs.

There’s still room, and perhaps a need, for commentary and analysis of major Norwegian issues in English, along with photos and features, and I still enjoy trying to explain Norway to a foreign audience. That’s why this website will offer more views based on news. The site is due for a redesign this autumn and will remain a source of information about what’s going on in Norway, just not to the same degree as before. There’s also nearly 16,000 stories about Norway searchable and available in our archive.

I actually semi-retired as of June 1st. After 12 years running the website mostly alone, and carrying on without any major source of income for the past year, it’s time to pursue other interests instead of just writing about them, and reduce screen time.

The summer holidays, when the news scene quiets down anyway, seemed the best time to start phasing in these changes. As the Norwegians would say, God Sommer (Have a nice summer), and thanks for clicking in.
