Norway’s state railway agency BaneNor could finally announce that it could reopen Bergensbanen on Tuesday, 12 days after a cargo train derailed on the popular and busy line between Oslo and Bergen. That led to a pile-up of containers at the Arna station outside Bergen.
The accident on March 22 forced major repair work on the line including removal of all the containers in and around the tunnel at Arna. “It’s been a major and time-consuming job to remove all the containers and repair damage to railroad infrastructure after the derailment,” wrote BaneNor in a press release.
Emergency repair crews worked around the clock during the Easter holidays to get the line back in service, while bus lines transported passengers around the accident site.
