Norway aids Sweden with Eurovision security

Norwegian police have been sent to Malmö in southern Sweden to help Swedish police with security at this week’s Eurovision Song Contest. Danish police are also taking part, because of terrorism concerns.

Swedish broadcaster SVT, which is hosting the huge event this year since Sweden won the contest last year, said police have defined Eurovision as “a completely special national event” expected to attract around 100,000 visitors to Malmö. Semi-finals will be broadcast live on Tuesday and Thursday night, with the final scheduled for Saturday night at the Malmö Arena.

Security is especially high because Israel, as a member of the European Broadcasting Union, will be participating as usual. Its war on Gaza that has killed nearly 40,000 Palestinians iin the past six months, however, has sparked international protests and heightened concerns of a terrorist attack.

Norway’s entry this year will be performing in the second semi-final on Thursday and hopes to proceed to Saturday’s final. Norwegian performers, meanwhile, won Sweden’s contest and will open the show on Tuesday. staff
