Norway’s king, crown prince, prime minister, the president of the Norwegian Parliament, the mayor of Oslo and several other top political leaders all turned out on Monday for a memorial to the victims of last year’s terrorist attack by the Palestinian organization Hamas against Israel. The memorial was held at the synagogue in Oslo, Det Mosaiske Trossamfund.
“The suffering that’s been a result of terror and war in the Middle East touches and worries us all,” read the statement from King Harald V. “Here at home (in Norway) everyone who has family and friends in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon are hit hard.” He urged Norwegians “to stand together so that individuals and groups shall feel safe in Norway. No one should have to experience hate, harassment and threats because of conflicts other places in the world. Each and everyone of us can contribute.”
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre also spoke, noting the “enormous suffering in the Middle East.” He also stressed that Jews in Norway “must not stand alone. We stand together,” especially on the first anniversary of what he called “Hamas’ gruesome attack” on Israelis last year.
