Marius Borg Høiby, the 27-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was released from jail on Wednesday after police opted against asking the Oslo County Court to extend his custody. They stated that they no longer feared he would tamper with evidence, but he’s been hit with two new restraining orders and police are also investigating whether he’s behind another possible sexual assault.
Høiby, who was arrested last week for the third time in three months, had been ordered held in custody while the police continued their investigation into what’s become a long list of charges against him. The drama around Høiby has plagued both the Royal Family and arguably the entire country for months, and affected Norwegians’ traditionally strong support for the monarchy.
His defense attorney said he wasn’t surprised Høiby was released, claiming he “never should have been jailed in the first place.” The charges against Høiby remain serious, though, including violence, vandalism and, most recently, rape. He denies guilt in most of them.
