Norway’s iconic mountain road known as Trollstigen may finally reopen after landslides last season and threats of more. Now the local community where it’s located in Møre og Romsdal intends to impose tolls to help pay for road improvements.
Trollstigen, best known for its hairpin turns, was closed immediately last June after boulders crashed down the mountainside and hit a car. More slide danger kept it closed through the rest of the summer season, disappointing tourists and the local tourism business.
It’s due to re-open for at least limited use this summer season, but the local county council voted last week to impose tolls to help fund the work needed to secure the road against landslides. State broadcaster NRK reported that the toll proposal was approved by a vote of 35-12, but now must be approved in Parliament.
The state provided NOK 40 million for immediate repairs to the road last year, but it wasn’t enough to ensure safety. The new toll amount has not been set.
