‘People’s party’ kept police busy during and after World Cup action

Norwegian police had boosted their presence in most cities and town around the country on Saturday night, when Norway faced off against England at the World Cup in Miami. There were a few accidents and some rowdiness, most of it tied to alcohol consumption.

Several football fans ended up spending the night in custody until they sobered up, according to police reports in Oslo, Bergen, Hamar, Haugesund and several cities in Agder. The vast majority, however, behaved well at what the Norwegians call a folkefest (people’s party) before, during and after the World Cup match in Miami.

Police estimated there were around 135,000 people in downtown Oslo Saturday night, and around 26,000 gathered at the Frogner Stadium, where three “incidents” were reported to police. Oslo’s emergency hospital (Legevakt) attended to around 45 people who’d been injured in the course of the celebrations.
