Excavation revealed buried cash

Routine excavation work on a road in Sandnes, western Norway, revealed a black plastic bag stuffed with cash. The honest excavator called police, who have now determined that the cash amounted to just over NOK 2 million (USD 200,000).

Speculation quickly went to the millions of still-unfound cash stolen in the notorious robbery of a NOKAS currency terminal in nearby Stavanger back in 2004. It led to a shoot-out during which a police officer was killed. The robbery was led by a criminal gang, some of whom have already been released from prison while others have died or even been killed in connection with new crimes.

Police now report that the money found under Oalsgata in Sandnes contains some of Norway’s newer cash that was introduced many years later, meaning it isn’t part of what disappeared in the NOKAS robbery. Police wouldn’t say whether criminal technicians have found any traces of DNA or fingerprints on the cash, much of which is old and no longer in circulation. Prosecutor Isa Linn Ravndal stated in a press release that it was also unclear whether any rewards will go to the finder if no one appears to claim the money.
