The Norwegian Parliament’s disciplinary committee has launched a probe into whether the sharp rise in defense spending is complying with purchasing regulations within the defense sector. The probe follows recent reports on cost overruns and incorrect classifying of documents.
The probe was initiated by the left-wing Reds Party (Rødt), which wants to better control defense spending compliance following major increases in state budget allocations. Newspapers Dagens Næringsliv (DN) and VG have both reported on allegedly excessive spending on various products and budget overruns on some purchasing processes.
Hege Bae Nyholt, who represents Rødt on the committee, was glad a majority voted in favour of the probe. The Parliament hasn’t been satisfied with written answers to various questions put to Defense Minister Tore O Sandvik, prompting Nyholt to stress how the massive efforts to strengthen defense in Norway hinge on its “long-term legitimacy” within the population.
