Norway’s 88-year-old Queen Sonja has had to pull out of a long-planned royal tour to Vestlandet next week, after she once again experienced heart trouble. “The queen needs rest, care and medication,” staff at the Royal Palace announced during the long holiday weekend.
Queen Sonja was on the balcony of the palace during the recent 17th of May celebrations and has made several other public appearances during what’s typically a busy month. She also has a busy month ahead, but is now forced to pay attention to the heart trouble that earlier has led to hospital stays and insertion of a pacemaker.
She hasn’t been admitted to the hospital this time and will reportedly rest at home. Cardiologist Dan Atar stressed that such trouble, called hjerteflimmer in Norwegian, is “very common” and that one of three over age 75 is afflicted.
The 89-year-old King Harald, who also has had health and mobility problems, planned to go ahead with the trip to four municipalities in Western Norway on board the royal yacht Norge, which is due to keep sailing north for additional visits to Bodø and Beiarn.
The monarch’s 94-year-old sister Princess Astrid, meanwhile, has been receiving care at the National Hospital this month also because of heart trouble. She asked palace staff to state that she’s “in the best hands” after also getting a pacemaker.
