Travelers passing through Oslo’s main airport at Gardermoen (OSL) on Monday got stuck in unexpectedly long lines at security control. Some had to wait as long as 40 minutes, at the risk of missing their flights, and the problem may continue over the next few days.
Airports administrator Avinor blamed the long lines on sick leave among the security guards examining X-rays of carry-on bags, plus the need for on-the-job training of new guards.
Helene Jensen of Avinor seemed defensive when questioned by state broadcaster NRK about the back-up at security, claiming Avinor can’t know in advance how many security guards may call in sick. Kjell Frode Vik of Avarn, responsible for guard staffing at OSL, called it a “personnel challenge” to suddenly need 20 more people, and stressed that they’re continually training new staff members before the busy summer holidays set in.
Avinor advised travelers this week to be prepared for more delays this week and allow plenty of time at the airport before take-off.
