Norwegian health officials are reporting a slight increase of Corona virus infection through the summer months. Now they worry two new strains of the virus may spread after the summer holidays.
The state health institute FHI said the strains identified as NB.1.8.1 and XFG, also known as “Nimbus” and “Stratus,” now dominate in Norway. They set off waves of infection in Asia earlier this year and in the US this summer. Both are viewed as more contagious than previous strains.
“These variants are dominating in Europe at the moment,” Siri Helene Hauge of FHI told state broadcaster NRK on Thursday. “We don’t expect or have observed any changes in the degree of illness, but we’re following the situation as usual this summer and will be through the autumn.”
She stressed that Norwegians now have a high level of immunity, and that it was difficult to predict the effect of the new strains.
