Foreign ministry issues travel warning

Just a week before the Norwegian Nobel Committee will present this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuela’s opposition leader, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry has warned its own citizens to drop any travel plans to the troubled country. It views the security situation in Venezuela as far too risky.

The ministry issued a press release on Tuesday describing the security situation as “unpredictable” and warning that developments in the country can change rapidly. It noted how transport- and communication lines in and out of the country are affected, and several airlines have cancelled their flights.

“This can mean that the possibility of leaving Venezuela can become extremely limited, or completely disappear on short notice,” the ministry wrote. It added that Norway’s closest embassy in Bogota, Colombia will only have “limited” opportunity to handle any consular matters or assistance to Norwegian citizens in Venezuela.
