‘No motive’ in shopping center shooting

Police were able to subdue and arrest a young man on Monday morning after he’d fired a rifle and threatened the public inside the large Storo Shopping Center in Oslo. They later discovered he was also carrying a knife and what looked like a baseball bat.

The man himself had called the police, who later reported they’d found one gunshot in a ceiling. The man has no prior police record and police don’t think he was trying to injure other people, but they quickly evacuated the shopping center and both customers and personnel were alarmed.

“We took down the metal fence to close the store and waited for the police to come and get us,” one shopkeeper told state broadcaster NRK. She added that one of their customers was a doctor “and she ran out to see if anyone was injured, but she said no one was.”

The man has since been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and for making threats. Police reported Monday evening that he hadn’t undergone questioning and was under the care of medical personnel. They had no clear motive for his actions.
