Tens of thousands of Norwegians have signed a petition calling for a ban on private fireworks on the one night of the year when they’re allowed in Norway: New Year’s Eve. Organizers reported this week that 67 organizations also support a ban, according to animal protection agency Dyrebeskyttelsen.
Serious accidents involving fireworks and concern for the dogs, other pets and wild animals disturbed by fireworks prompted the petition, which has been turned over to the government. Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen said she can’t promise a ban, but she said the issue will be reviewed and tougher rules evaluated.
Fully 72 percent of those questioned in a recent public opinion poll supported a ban on private use of fireworks, as long as local authorities offered public displays of fireworks around the country on New Year’s Eve.
