New Congo murder trial postponed

Two Norwegians jailed on murder charges in the Democratic Republic of Congo will have to wait even longer for a new trial. They won an appeal to the country’s supreme court last month, but a new civilian trial ordered by the high court has been postponed.

Tjostolv Moland and Joshua French were reported to be bitterly disappointed by the news, and criticized the Norwegian Foreign Ministry for not putting more pressure on Congo to expedite their trial.

The two young men were arrested last spring after their taxi driver was found murdered. They’ve been held ever since in a military prison in Kisangani.

They were sentenced to death last year by two military courts, but the high court threw out the death sentences. A new trial is tentatively set for May 25.
