A German tourist in his 20s was killed when he fell into a river in Aurland Monday afternoon. Police say he fell into the river Tofteelva in Gudvangen and drowned.
Police reported that an ambulance, air ambulance and other emergency crews were called to the scene to launch a search for the young man. They recovered his body about an hour later.
He’d been hiking with a companion when he fell down the mountainside and into the river. Newspaper Bergens Tidende reported that it took his companion a while to call for help because she needed to get down from the mountain herself first. She was receiving assistance from a crisis team.
It was the latest tourist fatality after a summer with several other deadly accidents involving tourists, some of whom are said to underestimate the risks of the Norwegian outdoors.
