Student murdered in Budapest

UPDATED: A young Norwegian woman studying in Budapest has been found dead in a student hostel in the Hungarian capital. Police think she was strangled.

The body of the 21-year-old woman from Oslo was found Sunday afternoon at the City Hostel Flora in Budapest. Police now say she was Norwegian and that her family has been notified, according to Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

TV 2 reported that items found in her room at the hostel connected her to the Semmelweis medical school in Budapest. It later was confirmed that she was about to begin veterinary studies at the Szent Istvan university.

Hungarian police were reluctant to reveal more details around the apparent murder, saying they were restricted by local laws. A police spokesman said, however, “we are completely certain she has been killed,” and it’s believed a full murder investigation was being launched.

Norway’s Foreign Ministry has been contacted by the Hungarian police and the Norwegian Embassy in Budapest was following developments.
