SAS and OSL ‘best in Europe’

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) and Oslo’s main airport at Gardermoen (OSL) have once again topped a ranking of international airports and the carriers serving them. OSL was ranked as Europe’s most punctual major airport, while SAS was ranked as most punctual and reliable.

The ranking, compiled by flight information service FlightStats, reported that SAS achieved an on-time performance record last year of 88.22 percent, well above the industry average for major European airlines of 79.45 percent. If was the second year in a row for SAS to win the punctuality prize, over European finalists Finnair, KLM, LOT and Ryanair.

SAS had also been among finalists for the most punctual airline in the entire world, along with Japan Airlines (JAL), Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways (ANA), Gulf Air and KLM. ANA won that category, though, with an on-time record of 90.18 percent. Alaska Airlines had the best on-time performance among major North American airlines, with 87.79 percent of its flights on time.

Oslo’s main airport OSL also won the punctuality award for the second year in a row, with an on-time performance record of 87.17 percent, compared to the average of 73.42 percent for major European airports. OSL’s closest rivals for the top ranking included Berlin Tegel (TXL), Athens (ATH), Vienna International Airport (VIE) and Amsterdam Airport Schipol (AMS).
