The Royal Palace in Oslo has announced that funeral arrangements for Norway’s King Harald V have been set for 1pm on Wednesday September 9 at the Oslo Cathedral. The funeral will involve royal processions from the palace to the cathedral and then on to Oslo’s Akershus Castle and Fortress, where the king’s body will be placed in a sarcophagus alongside those of his father and grandfather.
The palace further announced that the funeral will be led by Norway’s archbishop, Olav Fykse Tveit, along with Oslo’s Bishop Sunniva Gylver. King Harald V died early Friday morning at the age of 89, after several years of declining health.
The king’s death has unleashed a huge wave of tributes and public grieving nationwide for a popular monarch who was viewed as unifier and role model for many. His body is currently lying in state at the Royal Palace in Oslo where members of the royal family were to ceremoniously escort his coffin to the palace chapel late Monday afternoon. Public visitation will be offered from Tuesday at 2pm until Tuesday September 8 at 6pm.
