Golfer Suzann Pettersen, one of Norway’s best-known athletes outside the country’s borders, is about to be even better known, after a US sports magazine publishes some remarkably revealing photos.
Pettersen, age 31, was asked to pose naked for major sports network ESPN’s annual “Body Issue,” a magazine that has featured several other top athletes in the buff. The idea, according to Norwegian newspaper VG, is to reveal the actual bodies of top athletes, to help explain how they’re able to perform at the high levels that they do.
Pettersen is one of 27 athletes who’ve been asked to pose for this year’s “Body Issue,” which goes on sale in the US on Friday. The photo of her was taken on Cocoa Beach in Florida, where Pettersen lives, and she has no regrets.
“It was cool,” she told VG, “cool to be asked and cool to do this. I think it was fun to be on the list of those they wanted to include. Here in the US, this magazine has prestige.”
Pettersen admitted that she thought twice or more about the photo invitation, “but since it was them who asked, and in the setting it was, I thought it was a fine thing to do.”
She’s in good company. Tennis star Serena Williams posed for the magazine’s debut issue in 2009 and this year’s athletes include New York Knicks basketball player Tyson Chandler and runner Walter Dix. Pettersen isn’t sure why she’s the only golfer in the issue.
“I don’t know, maybe I’m seen as more athletic than the others?” Pettersen mused. “I have at any rate become one experience richer.”
Pettersen, known as “Tutta” in Norway, planned to travel home soon with a full program planned for next week including her annual “Suzann Junior Challenge” at the Oslo Golf Club, to encourage young golfers. Her next tournament will be the Evian Masters in late July.
