Media outlets in northern Norway were reporting an unusual accident this week, after a relatively small 18-foot motor boat collided with a whale at Torsken in Troms over the weekend.
The boat’s skipper told local newspaper Folkebladet that he and a friend were zipping along at around 20 knots when a whale suddenly rose out of the water about five meters from the boat. Seconds later the boat hit the whale and he was flung into the air and into the chilly water.
“We didn’t have a chance to avoid him,” he told the paper. “I didn’t even have time to get scared.” The boat survived the collision and he was plucked out of the water. The whale reportedly dove and disappeared.
