Police in Oslo were investigating reports of two rapes of young women taking part over the weekend in one of the huge annual parties held by and for the graduating high school students known as russ. The two students reported the rapes separately in the early morning hours of Sunday.
Both were attending one of the major large gatherings of partying graduates in the parking lot at Tryvann, in the hills above Oslo. Thousands of the students, most aged around 18-19, traditionally gather at Tryvann in their elaborately equipped party vans and busses during the weeks of often wild partying tied to the russ celebrations.
Despite repeated warnings by police and school officials for the teenagers to take care of each other, especially given the usual consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol, accidents and assaults often occur. In this case the women were being treated and evidence gathered at local rape reception centers pending more detailed questioning by police.
It was unclear whether the assailants also were partying russ. No arrests had been made by early Monday.
