Fatal tunnel collision sparked fire

Investigators were probing another serious accident inside a Norwegian tunnel this week, after a foreign-registered truck collided head-on with a car in the Storsand tunnel on the E39 highway at Skaun in Sør-Trøndelag on Thursday. The driver of the car was killed instantly and the truck burst into flames.

The truck was carrying a load from the solar factory Fesil Sunergy in Orkanger when it collided with the car. The Polish driver of the truck was not physically injured but suffered shock and was taken to St Olav Hospital in Trondheim.

The truck fire resulted in heavy smoke inside the tunnel but police had control over both vehicles plus the two cars following them. Other motorists managed to evacuate the tunnel on their own.

Emergency crews extinguished the midday blaze and an investigation began. It’s the second major tunnel fire resulting in closure in recent weeks but highway officials insist Norwegian tunnels are safe. It was unclear how long the Storsand tunnel would remain closed.
