Seized refugee toddler back in Norway

A two-year-old girl whose mother was murdered and whose father then fled Norway with the toddler in tow has been sent back to Norway by Italian authorities. Her father, age 28, was arrested on murder charges in Rome, and still had the little girl with him.

Her dramatic flight with her father made headlines earlier this summer and Norwegian authorities had been trying to arrange her safe return to Norway. Both the girl, her late 17-year-old mother and father were refugees from Afghanistan although only the little girl and her mother had formally sought asylum in Norway.

The circumstances leading up to the stabbing death of the mother in Grua, Oppland County, in June remained unclear but the father is the prime suspect. He denies having anything to do with the murder. He was recently extradited from Italy to Norway and remains in custody while awaiting trial.
