Ekran wins Finnmark dogsled race

Sigrid Ekran, a 34-year-old professional dogsled racer, won the tough 1,000-kilometer Finnmarksløpet in Northern Norway on Friday. She used nearly six days but crossed the finish line in Alta well ahead of her rivals.

The annual race goes from Alta to the city of Kirkenes and back again, over wild Arctic terrain. Ekran said she was relieved and “very proud” of her dogs, “who did a fantastic job.”

Ekran and her team of seven dogs cross the finish line just after 8:30am, marking the first time she won the race. She finished second in 2011 behind dogsledding legend Roger Dahl, but also has won the Femundløpet in eastern Norway in both 2010 and 2011.

She said she planned to celebrate by spending more time with her dogs, relaxing and eating ice cream.
