Mother and son killed in motorcycle accident

UPDATED: A 16-year-old boy and his mother in her 40s were killed Tuesday when the motorcycle they were riding collided with a motor home on the E6 highway at Harpefoss in Gudbrandsdalen. Police said the woman died instantly while her son was declared dead shortly thereafter.

One of the two persons in the motor home was injured and sent to hospital in nearby Lillehammer. Police described the accident as a head-on collision, and couldn’t immediately provide a cause.

They later reported, however, that the motor home had a video camera mounted inside that captured the collision on tape. “We now have an overview of everything that happened,” acting sheriff Jon Gaarden told state broadcaster NRK. “This is just a tragic accident.” He said there was no indication of high speed and the mother was driving the motorcycle when it crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the motor home.

The accident was reported at around 5:30pm. The mother and her son were from the area of Nord- and Sør-Fron in Gudbrandsdalen, which mounted a crisis team to help their family. The accident closed the southbound lane of the highway, creating lengthy traffic delays. Police could reopen the highway at 9:30pm.
