A woman in her 80s was assaulted while out walking in the middle of the day on Saturday on the affluent island of Nøtterøy just south of Tønsberg. Police say she was knocked to the ground and subjected to a sexual assault “that we have described as a rape.”
Local newspaper Tønsberg Blad reported that the woman had taken the bus from Tønsberg to Nøtterøy and was assaulted in an underground pedestrian tunnel at the intersection of Øgårdsveien and Kirkeveien at Teie, a popular commercial center on the island.
Police have launched a major investigation to find the assailant, described as a young man in his 20s, slim and tall and wearing a dark blue or brown hooded jacket. Magnar Pedersen of the Vestfold Police District said police are tracking down surveillance video from the area, undertaking technical examination of the assault site and planning to go door-to-door to question local residents.
Police also fear other elderly women may have been assaulted also without reporting it, because of the nature of the attack. “It is extremely seldom that young people in their 20s sexually assault someone in their 80s,” Pedersen said, urging any other victims to contact police.
