Victorious Brækhus ended up on crutches

Norwegian boxing champion Cecilia Brækhus was hobbling around on crutches Sunday despite successfully defending her four world champion titles against Jennifer Retzke in Denmark on Saturday. Brækhus injured her right foot in the third round, but managed to hide her pain and go on to win.

She didn’t want Retzke to realize she was injured, and later joked that she managed to fight and win “on just one leg.” A quick trip to a local hospital indicated there were no broken bones, but Brækhus has been ordered to use crutches for the next week and do no training for the next month.

She’ll need to have an MRI exam when she returns to Berlin, where she lives and trains professionally. Brækhus kept smiling anyway, delighted she’d maintained her record of never losing a professional boxing match.

“It doesn’t matter that I won’t be able to train for a while now, because the plan was to take it easy after this fight,” Brækhus told news bureau NTB. She was also delighted with her latest victory, even though it was much more painful than normal.
