A college student in Oslo who recently returned from a trip to the Middle East has been confirmed to be ill with the measles. He’s been admitted to hospital and his roommate at the Kringsjå student housing complex has also been tested.
State broadcaster NRK reported that health authorities were working this week to chart and check other people with whom the young man has been in contact, and determine whether they’d been vaccinated for measles.
The young man was also contagious during his flight back to Norway, and the airline has been contacted so that it in turn can contact other passengers on the flight.
There’s been a resurgence of measles in both the US and Europe in recent months. Most residents of Norway have been vaccinated for measles, which can have serious consequences including blindness. Norwegian health authorities claimed the outbreak was a reminder that everyone should be vaccinated, according to Dr Trude Arnesen of the infectious diseases division at the state public health institute.
