British cake-thrower sentenced to jail

A 22-year-old British woman who threw a cake at a Norwegian government minister during last month’s Pride Parade in Oslo was sentenced to 45 days in jail on Friday. She’s already been held in custody since her arrest after the June 25 incident.

The woman faced a maximum sentence of 10 years for assaulting and preventing a government minister from carrying out his or her duties. Solveig Horne, in charge of family and equality issues in Norway, was leading the annual Pride Parade when she was attacked.

An Oslo judge ruled that the defendant knew who she was targeting, after witnesses said she ran forward and beyond others until she reached Horne. The minister testified via video that she was frightened by the attack and remains concerned about government officials’ security.

The defendant has refused to answer questions or testify at her trial, which was quickly scheduled because she’s a foreign citizen. The woman’s defense attorney said she thought the 45-day sentence was too strict, and would consider filing an appeal.
