Ashton “Ash” Carter, the US Secretary of Defense, was due to visit Norway’s large military air station in Bodø this week. It will mark the first time an American defense chief has visited Norway in 11 years.
The visit reflects increased tensions with Norway’s northern neighbour, Russia, where he’ll be talking about Norway’s security situation in the northern areas with Norwegian Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide.
Carter was expected to arrive in Bodø on Thursday, September 8, and stay until the next day. In addition to visiting military facilities in Bodø he will also have bilateral talks with Søreide, reported news bureau NTB.
