At least one Norwegian is happy that the millionaire real estate developer and showman Donald J Trump has won his bid for the US presidency. Suzann Pettersen, Norway’s golf star who’s lived in Florida for several years, was hailing her friend on social media after this week’s election.
“‘Hats off’ for this man, you did it!!” Pettersen wrote on Twitter, which Trump has used often himself to both sing his own praises and offend others. News bureau NTB went on to report that Pettersen referred to Trump as “Mr President” with a smiley face of approval, and ended with “congratulations, my friend.”
Pettersen’s initial message, however, was removed from her Twitter account not long after, only to reappear in an edited form. NTB reported that Pettersen’s adviser, Lars Gilleberg, said the golf star “engages herself in sport and not in politics” but looked forward to play in the US Open on one of Trump’s golf courses.
Pettersen and Trump reportedly have become good friends in the past few years. In 2015, Pettersen told NTB that “if he ends up in the White House, I’ll at any rate go there. Then I’ll have a friend high up. I’ve already begun to call him the president.”
Asked how she viewed the Norwegian media’s often critical coverage of Trump, Pettersen said he was “described in many instances as a clown. At the same time, I know few people who like themselves as well as he does. He’s not afraid to say what he means. Now and then, it can be completely wrong, but other times it’s a ‘home run.'”
