UiO rector bound for Karolinska

Dr Ole Petter Ottersen, the outgoing rector at the University of Oslo (UiO), has been recommended by the board of Sweden’s prestigious medical school Karolinska to take over as its chief. Now it’s up to the Swedish government to make a final decision, which is expected to be affirmative.

“Karolinska will get an experienced and competent rector with broad support within the organization,” Mikael Odenberg, chairman of Karolinska, wrote in a press release on the institute’s own website. The board’s choice of Ottersen was unanimous.

Newspaper Dagens Næringsliv (DN) reported Tuesday that Ottersen has been in demand as his term at UiO expired. He was also tapped to be the new rector at the university in Gothenburg but he withdrew as a candidate. A few days later it became known that Karolinska wanted Ottersen as well after he finishes up his second and last four-year term as head of UiO.  Ottersen is a professor of medicine himself.
