Around 60 people were evacuated Friday morning from a tunnel being used in connection with construction of the new Follobane train line south of Oslo, after fire broke out in a tank truck inside the tunnel. The fire forced closure of Mosseveien, a main artery leading in and out of Oslo from the south.
State broadcaster NRK reported that firefighters had extinguished the flames while police were still trying to make sure all workers inside the tunnel had been evacuated. The tunnel runs from the Sjursøya area of Oslo’s inner harbour to Mosseveien, to serve construction work on the new train line running alongside and under the roadway.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries but the closure of Mosseveien, which serves as a portion of the E18 highway, was disrupting traffic in the middle of the long Kristi Himmelfarts (Ascension Day) holiday. It’s a heavily trafficked route, especially before weekends, to summer homes along Norway’s southeast coast.
