Police arrest suspected serial rapist

A 37-year-old man was in police custody in Oslo Tuesday, charged with several attempted rapes and violent assaults on women, all of them in their 20s. Police claim the man followed the women home and attacked as they unlocked the doors of their homes.

Investigators worked in all secrecy since late last year to track down the man they believed tried to rape four women using the same methods. “It wasn’t until Friday that we were certain of his identity and could arrest him at 9:15pm near his home,” Kari-Janne Lid of the Oslo Police District told newspaper Aftenposten.

He faced a custody hearing in Oslo on Monday and was ordered held in prison for four weeks while police continued their investigation. They’re now probing several other cases of attempted rapes in the area between downtown Oslo and the popular Grünerløkka district.

Police claim they have evidence tying the man to the four assaults. He also has a record of prior assaults.
