Sow gives birth to 26 piglets

The pig pen at an ecological farm in Vang near Hamar was mighty full heading into the weekend. A sow named Gode Gloria (Good Gloria) gave birth to no less than 26 piglets on Tuesday, nearly double the size of a sow’s normal litter.

“First we got two, then four, then eight little pigs,” farmer Guro Sveberg told state broadcaster NRK. “When we had 17 I thought it was over, but then came nine more!” Two of the piglets didn’t survive, but 24 did, and its been hectic in her barn ever since.

Since Gode Gloria can “only” nurse 14 at a time, Sveberg and some helpers need to assist in feeding the other 10. The litter has been divided into two groups, to make the hourly feedings a bit easier. “We’re working in shifts to take care of them all,” Sveberg said.

A large female sheep gave birth earlier this spring to seven lambs at another farm in Hedmark County, and that generated headlines too. Veterinarian Carl Andreas Grøntvedt called the birth of 26 pigs “very seldom” and bordering on incredible. “I haven’t heard of this happening in Norway before,” he told NRK. Sveberg linked the multiple births to “good genes” and sheer luck.
