Heavy rain warnings posted

State meteorologists were warning of a major downpour on Thursday that could cause flooding and other damage in several counties of Southern Norway. They boosted their initial warning level from yellow to orange on Wednesday afternoon.

“There will be a lot of water pouring down, 30 millimeters in three hours,” Hanne Beate Skattør of the state meteorologic  institute told state broadcaster NRK. That can cause problems on the roads and in towns and cities, she said.

Creeks and rivers may run over their banks, and she urged homeowners to clear rain gutters and drainage areas around buildings. The warnings applied from the southern Agder counties including the entire coast from Egersund and Kristiansand up to Oslo, and north to Geilo in the mountains and beyond Lillehammer.

Rain was expected to fall all morning and build up to heavy downpours in the afternoon and at night, with the worst due to be over by Friday morning.
