Fire claims two more lives

Fire and smoke that swept through a home in Bergen over the weekend have claimed the lives of two more members of the family living there. A third child remained in critical condition on Tuesday.

State broadcaster NRK reported that the 41-year-old mother in the family died during the night, along with a 14-year-old daughter. Another daughter, aged 9, died on Monday.

Four unconscious members of the family were pulled out of the row house by fire fighters on Saturday, while two others had escaped themselves. The family was originally from Syria but had been living in Bergen for several years.

“This is a huge tragedy that’s affecting the entire community,” Beate Husa, the Bergen city government official in charge of health and safety issues, stated in a press release. “We express our deepest sympathy with the family and their network that’s hit so hard.”

Local police have called in state crime technicians to help them determine the cause of the blaze.
