Seafood exports take a dive

After years of strong and steady growth, the value of Norwegian seafood exports fell 14 percent in August compared to last year. Experts blame a stronger krone and lower demand in the midst of the Corona crisis.

“The decline in seafood exports is a warning about challenging market conditions as a result of the corona pandemic,” stated Fisheries Minister Odd Emil Ingebrigtsen of the Conservative Party.

Seafood remains Norway’s second-largest industry after oil, though. Export value in August amounted to NOK 7.3 billion, down from NOK 8.5 billion last year. Salmon prices in particular have fallen, and salmon accounts for a large portion of total seafood sales.
