Halden murders baffle police

A young man who shot and killed two men just before his victims were heading out to hunt with several others still isn’t talking and won’t reveal his motive. Police had thought the murders were linked to a conflict but now they’re not so sure.

The murders took place early in the morning of October 4, when more than a dozen men and boys were gathering at a farm outside Halden, south of Oslo. Suddenly the hunters became the targets of a 29-year-old man who was not part of the group but showed up at the farm. He shot and killed a father and his son and wounded a third man.

News bureau NTB reported this week that police don’t think the third man was a target, but was instead shot by accident. He survived. Police also reportedly think their theory of a prior conflict “has been weakened” without saying why.

The assailant is currently undergoing psychiatric examination to determine whether he’s fit to stand trial. He has acknowledged that he fired the shots that killed the two men identified as Per-Ove and Bjørn Rune Engebretsen.
