Police had to evacuate a packed nightclub in Tønsberg at around 2am on Sunday, after a man started attacking other guests with pepper spray usually used for self-defense. Three people were sent to the hospital and several hundred needed help from emergency crews at the scene.
Police were called to the nightclub early Sunday morning, and couldn’t immediately say what set off the furor. A man went around spraying other guests with the substance that causes great discomfort and disables its victims.
Emergency crews opted to evacuate the nightclub because so many people were in distress. “Lots of people were lying on the floor and the situation was chaotic,” one guest told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). Victims were advised to repeatedly rinse their faces with water.
A man in his 30s was arrested and charged in the case, also after he’d bitten a security guard at the club. “We still haven’t had a clarification from the man,” police operations leader Øystein Eikedalen told NRK. He was due to undergo questioning on Monday.
