British frigate joins North Sea patrols

The British Navy is sending one of its frigates to help back up the Norwegian Navy in defending oil and gas installations in the North Sea. Magazine Teknisk Ukeblad reports that the defense reinforcements come after a meeting of the Joint Expeditionary Force.

Even though the Norwegian government claims it’s received no concrete threats against the oil installations, the US may also send vessels to add to the patrols. Norway’s extensive offshore oil fields suddenly emerged as targets after suspected sabotage to pipelines in the Baltic Sea last week.

The goal is to keep gas flowing through pipelines running from Norway to both the European continent and the UK. Norway is now the largest supplier of gas to Europe after Russia cut off its supplies. Russia has been widely accused of using its gas as a weapon, setting off an energy crisis aimed at splitting Europe and weakening its support for Ukraine after Russia invaded its neighbour last winter.
