Military exercises in downtown Oslo

Norway’s defense department sent out a last-minute notice on Wednesday, warning of training exercises in and over the Norwegian capital. The unusual exercises were due to include the use of Bell 412 military helicopters.

It’s become more common for pairs of helicopters, many of which are now based at the Rygge airfield about an hour’s drive south of Oslo, to fly in formation over the area. The training is part of various efforts to boost defense preparedness since Russia invaded Ukraine early last year. Exercises involving the use of anti-aircraft defense systems were also carried out in the capital earlier this year.

Now the military has alerted the public that helicopters will take part in new training exercises aimed at creating “realistic scenarios” for “a short time” after 10am. There was no sign of them as of midday and it remained unclear how long the exercises would last.

The exercises were due to take place on the same day that a government commission was releasing its report on the state of Norwegian defense and improvements that need to be made.
