Belgian soldiers indicted after brawl

Norwegian prosecutors have now indicted a total of eight Belgian soldiers after a brawl outside a pub in Åndalsnes in mid-February. The soldiers were in Norway for military winter exercises among troops that otherwise are NATO allies.

Reportedly good humour at the pub on Saturday night February 17 suddenly turned into a massive fight outside after the pub had closed. It remained unclear what sparked the brawl, but now eight of the Belgians are indicted on various charges including assault, aggravated assault and disturbing the peace.

“We have identified each soldier and have evidence that they committed the assaults for which they’re indicted,” prosecutor Ingvild Thorn Nordheim told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) on Friday. Six people were injured in the brawl, one of whom had to be sent to hospital in Molde.

The police investigation continues, with charges also likely to be filed against several local Norwegian residents involved in the brawl. The Belgian soldiers are contesting the charges against them, while Belgian defense officials have apologized for the brawl and cooperated with local police. The case is due to be heard in the local Møre og Romsdal court in September. staff
