Widerøe allies itself with Lufthansa

Widerøe, Norway’s short-haul airline that serves many small airports around the country, has signed a new agreement with the large German airline Lufthansa. It will allow Widerøe passengers to fly on to Lufthansa’s international destinations on one ticket.

The so-called “codeshare agreement” will take effect from September 1 and launch new routing agreements that also will allow baggage to be sent through to a traveler’s final destination.

Lufthansa has for years cooperated with SAS on both routes, ticketing and, not least, through the Star Alliance frequent flyer program. Now, as SAS emerges from bankruptcy, its new owner Air France-KLM is moving SAS from Star Alliance to its own Skyteam alliance.

Lufthansa, reports newspaper DN, is trying to lure SAS’ high-level frequent flyers by offering a “status match” program. That means a current SAS Eurobonus member with a gold card will automatically be granted a gold card in Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program. That now may appeal to Scandinavian passengers who also commute or travel with Widerøe in Norway.
