Norwegian police dump Musk’s ‘X’

Norway’s state police have ended 13 years of sending out operative announcements, often with a dose of humour, via the social media channel Twitter and tycoon Elon Musk’s later version of it, “X.” Now they prefer using their own app, Politiloggen, for both security and operative reasons.

Torgeir Haugen, section leader in the state police directorate, said the police had decided to “take ownership of our own data and not give it to a commercial third party.” Since the police started using Twitter in September 2011, they’ve posted nearly 675,000 messages to the public that used to be called “tweets.”

News bureau NTB noted that Musk also changed the rules for using X in June, after deciding that non-paying users wouldn’t be allowed to read more than 1,000 messages. That became a major problem for users in the public sector.

The police launched their own app in June, and it’s already been downloaded by 96,000 users in Norway. “It’s important for us that information coming from the police can be verified, and that people can be confident that it’s actually coming from the police,” said Karl Erik Thomassen, an operations leader in Troms. He added that the police will continue to add some humour to messages they send out, when appropriate.
