The spectacular derailing of a tram in downtown Oslo late last month remains under investigation, and its driver denies responsibility. He now claims he became unwell and lost consciousness, which is why the tram ran off its tracks and crashed into a computer store at high speed.
He’s been charged with a serious violation of traffic rules and police are still waiting for the results of a technical examination of the tram involved. It’s one of the new trams being phased into Oslo’s public transport system.
Four passengers on the tram suffered minor injuries in the accident, while several have noted that the tram suddenly was going very fast. Police reported last week that the driver has been questioned, said he suffered a black-out of sorts and doesn’t remember the accident itself.
A spokesman for the tram system expressed relief that no one was seriously injured and gratitude that the driver is receiving good care from the public health system. “Out of consideration for the ongoing investigation, we can’t comment further,” he said.
